Finals and A new computer !!

My results in Sngs have gone down a little bit...played 45 20's so far and I hit a little downswing, its no big deal... I hvent updated as often because I have finals and a bunch of exams due.

Last night I played 11th/189 in the P5's Open

In other news I bought my new comp..along with it im getting a 20 inch screen...

I made the final table of an omaha tourney ($10) and placed 4th/72 for a 60 dollar payday, it was exciting since I had never played omaha 8/b before ;0

Busted daily and sng performance

Today has been a rollercoaster day for poker, I directly bought into the daily and lost A10 Vs KQ on a Akx board, turn is a K.... out in 63/220 (30 pay). I played 7 sngs, lost the first four but moneyed the next three and won two of those three...talk about ups and downs ;0

Play Poker Like the Pro’s review:

To begin with this book is probably not for the advanced all around player, but moreseo a beginner’s guide to all the widely played poker games including Texas Holdem. For an experienced Holdem player, the book is instrumental in teaching important elements of games he/she may not be as familiar with such as razz, seven card stud, Omaha and Stud 8/B. Mostly this book teaches starting requirements to enter a pot and how to deal with certain obstacles that may come up. This book is not only a teaching manual but Hellmuth throws in many of his own poker anecdotes, and of course promotes his greatness in the process!

In terms of the Limit and No limit Holdem sections, they are of course the longest sections in the book because of their vast popularity, but I believe them to be the weakest in the book. Mainly because there are so many more books that deal with the subject in such more depth and greater detail that Hellmuth’s section is inadequate and leaves much to be desired.

The other sections dealing with the miscellaneous poker games are a nice beginner’s guide with some insightful views on the different games and Phil’s best starting hand guide for each game. These are very useful for players just starting out, especially since less is known about these games and the best starting hands in games such as Stud 8/B are still disputed by pro’s.

The weakest section of the book, however is the one regarding Internet poker. For the most part Phil just talks about Ultimatebet.com (the site he endorses) and talks little or nothing about the intricacies of Internet poker. For the most part this section is simply filler, if it were left out entirely, nothing would be lost from the book.

Overall however, a solid book for the beginning player, or the advanced specialist wishing to diversify in games, but it still has some major weaknesses including its brevity on key topics.

Its been an sng day

I felt like taking a break for tourneys for a day and just felt like grinding at the 20+2 sngs. Here are todays stats: (I multied 4 at a time,

Its quite a run as far as sng goes im on a heater, I hope it never ends...Unfortuneately I know these numbers are not sustainable. My plan is to play 100 of each SNG level starting at the 20's ending at the 200's, ill post results.

I satellited into this one, im too cheap to keep paying the 50 every time, lol. I performed better than yesterday, but still fell short of the money, I played well except for one hand. I help AJ clubs in early position at the 100/200 level with 4k in chips. I raised to 500 and got a call, flop came Ah 10s 5s, I bet 800 and caller raises me all in for 1k more, I call and there goes 2k chips when he flips over 1010. I should of folded the aj before the flop. After that I just bluffed away my chips trying to get something going, the cards were not working out for me this time.

Virtual Pc Review

Virtual Pc 7 (mac osx) Review


As some of you may already know I have a mac Powerbook G4, which I absolutely love but it has some major drawbacks when it comes to poker. Many of the better poker sites Ie. Party Poker, Paradise, Pokerstars. Full tilt etc.. only have software versions for windows pc’s. In order to work around this there is a program for mac osx that emulates the windows operating system which is made by windows: Virtual Pc 7.

To begin with Virtual Pc 7 is fairly expensive ($130) without an included operating system and more depending on the windows operating system you choose. It has been argued that windows 2k professional works best with VPC 7. Of course if you have a windows operating system lying around you do not need to shell out the money for another windows os.

Unfortunately it is not as easy as inserting the VPC cd and installing it real quick. First you have to install Vitrual Pc and then install your desired windows operating system along with it. Installing Virtual Pc is fairly easy, but installing the operating system (I chose windows 2k) gave me some problems, I had to restart it a couple times and it took a little long (I believe 2 hours). Once I got it installed, it ran virtual pc and started up the operating system and it boots up just as a normal computer would.

I ran Internet explorer and downloaded Full tilt Poker and Bodog as my test poker programs (your internet connection is automatically transferred to the emulated OS, no configuration is necessary). As expected the programs run rather slow and sluggish.

I started by playing two sit and go’s on FT and noticed immediately how slow it was, I was forced to reboot several times because FT would lock up or the OS would freeze. I changed the setting’s to turn off graphics to improve performance, but the software was still sluggish and it was continually locking up.

I moved on to trying out how Bodog would perform with Virtual Pc. The results were slightly better, it did not freeze up nearly as much. However it was still quite sluggish and barely palpable. After pressing buttons it would take seconds to respond and was fairly annoying.


Quick summary
Virtual Pc is the only way for a mac user to experience the better and bigger poker websites, but it is fairly limited, very slow and at times barely useable. It has a lot of glitches and you need to reset the operating system continually, otherwise it becomes very slow. Hopefully they will make improvements in the newer versions of Virtual pc, but for the serious online poker player, a pc is the only way to go.

Pokerroom Java review

Now you may be wondering, why on earth doesn’t he just download the pokerroom software, why use the java version? Well my friends the answer is simple. I am a college student who decided to get a mac powerbook g4 for its stability and its slickness, unfortunately macs + poker = trouble. I was told that virtual pc would be able to work well with all poker programs, but as just about any emulator does, it failed miserably making it almost unplayable. Now that leaves me with very few options in terms of poker, so I decided to turn to one of the best and only options available to me: the Java version of pokerroom software. In my other reviews I will write about Bugsy club (which actually has a mac osx software) and pacific poker (which also has a java version).

Ill start off by saying that the pokerroom java application is probably the best bet for people without windows pc’s or those that do not want to download poker software on the computer, however it has major problems. First of all it can be extremely buggy at times. There have been numerous occasions where the program and my games have locked up, causing me to reboot my computer or hightail to the nearest computer to continue my game. I have played with the actual downloadable software and this is not the case on that edition. However my biggest problem comes up when I load numerous sngs at the same time. For some reason, most of the times when two of my sngs begin at the same time two tables do not appear. Instead it becomes one table and the hands and tables are confused. This is a huge glitch in the system. In order to correct this I have to close the window and manually open up the sngs separately, which is a pain.

Also on another note the java lacks many of the cool features of the downloadable software for obvious reasons. It cannot give you statistics of your play, as the download software enables you to keep track of your sessions. Additionally the win percentages when players are all in are not present.

However the pokerroom java version does enable you to play poker with a user-friendly interface and the same graphics as the download version without having to save anything on your computer.


Short version

+ Allows players with operating systems other than windows (or those that do not want to download the software) to play on pokerroom with the same graphics and easy to use interface

- It can be very buggy at times, and does not have many of the cool functions of the download version such as statistics and win percentages of all in players.

Overall: 6/10, it’s the best java version there is, but needs improvement.
